Inglorious Basterds - a subjective review

After I heard so many people ooh-ing and aah-ing over this movie, I went to see it. But I was not that impressed. And I have several reasons for not liking the movie much.

-- My first reaction was that it is too much of an American gunslinger macho movie, that glorifies the idea of bloody revenge.
-- The characters are too caricature-like to my taste. Because of this it is not that easy to identify entirely with the good guys.
-- The historic time frame in my opinion is already too far away for the strong anti-German sentiments of the movie.
-- The creators of the film forgot that in Germany it is the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of fallen German soldiers who go to see the movie. How do you think they may react to the scene where a brave patriotic officer (who may be a Nazi, but may perhaps not be one) has his head bashed into a pulp by a baseball wielding American (be he Jewish or otherwise). Or what about the young soldier from Hamburg in the pub scene, celebrating the birth of his first child, who is tricked into putting his gun down by appealing to his humanity? Did he really deserve to die?
-- And finally: do we really need another medium that portrays some fictional bloodthirsty vengeful Jews of the past, when Islamic and other world-wide antisemitic propaganda in our days already created an image of the bloodthirsty Zionist Israeli of the present, an equally fictitious but increasingly accepted image?
